Before he became Santa Claus, with his familiar red and white suit, he went by the name of Saint Nicholas, wearing an entirely different outfit.

Saint Nick is in the (Historic Hillsman) house! Come to Sailor's Creek and whisper all your holiday wishes to the jolly fellow himself as he takes a quick break before loading up his sleigh.

Civil War-era's "Antebellum Saint Nicholas" will stop by to hear your last-minute holiday wishes

And take photos with visitors (regardless of what list you're on)

Bring your children to Sailor’s Creek Battlefield State Park to meet the jolly old elf himself and take their picture with Old Saint Nick as we ring in the Christmas season and make some cool decorations on Saturday, December 8 from noon to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 9 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

This event is free to the public and everyone, young or old, is encouraged to attend. Four-legged family members are also welcome, but must be on a leash at all times.

In addition to visiting Saint Nick, we will also offer a Christmas Crafts program at our visitor center where children can create decorations and ornaments for their tree at home.

Seasonal crafts like pine cone bird feeders will be available in the visitor center at Sailor's Creek Battlefield State Park, Va

During the mid-19th century, the surrounding townsfolk of Amelia County were settled into their busy, rural routine. Crops were planted, harvested and taken to market; children did their lessons and helped with chores around the farm; and as colder weather approached, many prepared for the long, cold months ahead and looked forward to the holiday feast of Christmas.Bring your children to Sailor’s Creek Battlefield State Park to meet the holly old elf himself and take their picture with Old Saint Nick as we ring in the Christmas season and make some cool decorations on Saturday, December 8 from noon to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 9 from 2:00 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Christmas was celebrated then much as it is today, with religious observances, decorating of the home and hearth, the exchange of presents and feasts with family and friends. European traditions such as caroling, decorations on a fresh cut cedar, mistletoe and a visit from Saint Nicholas filled the season with excitement, joy and hope for the coming year.

For soldiers of both sides during the Civil War, Christmas was a time for ceasing hostilities, furloughs home for those who could get them, decorating winter camps, snowball fights, caroling with comrades in arms, writing letters to loved ones and longing for the comforts of home.

This December, we will try and capture some of that same spirit as we present Saint Nicholas in the historic Hillsman House at Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park.

Families are invited to bring their children to see Saint Nick, take pictures and tell him all of their dreams of stuffed stockings by the hearth and presents under the tree on Christmas morning.
